When We Surrender brings together more than a decade of Combeau’s diaristic photographic practice, tracing recurring relationships between intimacy, migration, memory, landscape, and belonging. Photographs made across different periods and contexts are brought into constellation through shifts in scale, material, and installation, allowing images to accumulate meaning through their proximity to one another.
The exhibition also extends beyond Combeau’s personal archive through a photographic collaboration with Shenny de los Angeles, as well as I am you, and you are me, a broadsheet created with Exile Projects that brings together photographs made in the Everglades with prayers by Miccosukee educator and environmental advocate Betty Osceola.
